Hundreds Of Independent Record Labels Go Up In Smoke During U.K. Riots

10 08 2011

London and Manchester have been obliterated by 4 days of mindless rioting, vandalism, and chaos. So pretty much its L.A. when the Lakers win/loose a championship. As if breaking into working class mom and pops, beating up folks just for walking down the street, and looting everything in sight aint bad enough. Arson has struck the Sony Music Distribution center which houses thousands of albums from independent labels across the Globe.

Around 4am on Tuesday August 9th, the entire Sony Music Distro structure was engulfed in flames, burning it down to the ground. The fire which decimated the entire building, ravaged through entire inventory stock piles for over a hundred independent labels.

Some of the labels effected by the blaze includes, Sideone Dummy, Vice, Domino, Thrill Jockey, and The Begger Group which includes Rough Trade, Matador, 4AD, XL Recordings, and True Panther Sounds. All of which releases albums from a ton of your favorite artists.

The impact of the inferno is devastating for retail outlets across North America and the United Kingdom. Many of which will not be able to replenish stock for months. Insurance will most likely cover most of the damage dealt too the indie labels but the loss of such an amount of records and cd’s is staggering.

According to Exclaim Magazine, Thrill Jockey Records have lost $300,000 worth of product and Domino Records have lost almost all of the Arctic Monkeys new single “The Hell Cat Spangled Shalala”. We hope that many of the smaller independents effected by the Arson will be able to get back on their feet after such a fucked up event.

If you want to help out theses labels in their time of crisis get back on their feet visit Labellove.

No Arrests have been made in the arson.
